2017 Junior Programs!

A couple months ago, it was brought to my attention that one of the local mountain bike clubs, Summit Velo, was shutting it’s doors. Summit Velo had previously been one of the main mountain bike junior development programs in the area, operating for several years on the back of several stud volunteers. I was approached by a few parents, “Hey, did you hear Summit Velo shut down? You should start some programs!”

Well, as you may guess by the title of this post, it was a challenge I decided to take on! As a former full-time junior coach, I understand the challenges, but I also know the benefits first hand. I believe wholeheartedly in junior development programs, and saw the need for both a mountain bike program, AND, what the hell, if I’m doing that, I might as well start a running program too, as there’s never been one in Summit County while I’ve lived here.

I’ve hired a couple awesome assistant coaches, and we’re ready to help the next generation of young endurance athletes reach their goals!

We’ll have three main programs:

  1. High School/U23 mountain biking:
    • This program is preparation for the Summit Tigers HS mountain bike team, as well as prep for college mountain biking, for those athletes who are back for the summer. Practicing three days per week, and with customized online training plans for outside of group training, this program will take 14-23 year old athletes to the next level in their cycling skills and fitness.
  2. High School Running:
    • Very similar to the mountain biking program, this group will be aimed at preparing those competing in fall CHSAA cross country. Again, three days of training per week, along with customized online training plans, will take athletes from their new PR’s in track to setting new ones in XC this fall.
  3. Middle School Running:
    • This program is geared toward young athletes getting ready for the middle school XC season. This group will train 2 days per week with the main focus on education and healthy training practices. While gaining fitness and performance will certainly be a priority, teaching these young athletes that exercising can be be fun, and how to feel confident and competent in their sport will be the first priority.
